Based on a study of surface-activity theory, vacuum crystallization technique is applied to form an ammonium nitrate (AN) containing micro-holes in its crystals. The product is characterized by its ease of pulverization, having large surface area and self-sensitivity,as well as of increased deto?nating sensitivity. Its mechanical sensitivity, heat sensitivity, electric sensitivity and cap-sensitivity are also studied. The results show that the cap-sensitivity of the self-sensitive AN can be controlled in industrial processing, and that AN explosives having fine properties can be made from self-sensitive AN in place of ordinary ANs.
