To study the availability of asynchronous serial transfer lines in pre?sent automatic assembly systems，this paper introduces an object-oriented computer simulation method based on a Petri net model as well as the relevant software. Through systematic simulation experiments and result regression analysis for three，four and five-workstation serial transfer lines，effects of individual worksta?tion availability and buffer capacities upon the overall line availability, some rele?vant designs and maintenance criteria are deduced.
