In this paper a new design method for gun tubes is suggested, in which the elastic strength pressure (ESP) is set on a value permitting a slight amount of permanent deformation in the inner surface, say 0. 1 % . Discussions are given in the following topics : the permanent deformation of inner surface in the tube, influnence on the Bauschinger effect and selection of the optimal permitted permanent deformation . Tests of elasto-plastic loading and unloading in cylinders having various wall ratios and made of steels were carried out. Results of experiments coincide well with the expectation near εya= 0. 1 % .
