Trinitrophenyl azafulleroid was synthesized by a one-pot reaction of C60 with picryl chloride and sodium azide. The title compound was isolated by chromato?graphy and identified by FD — MS, UV —vis, IR and 13C NMR. C60 as a novel aliotrope has aroused wide interest in the field of physics and chemistry as well as in materials science. The title compound shows bright prospects in the application of C60 and its derivatives in energetic materials. Meanwhile, the paper elaborates on some problems regarding theoretical analyses in the synthesis and characterization.
